World Orchid Conference 2011 stamp set on sale from 12 November

Unique Orchids Blossom on World Orchid Conference 2011 Stamp Set – Stamp set commemorates the 20th World Orchid Conference in Singapore

10 November 2011 – Singapore Post (SingPost) shares Singapore’s pride in hosting the 20th World Orchid Conference (20WOC), “Where New and Old World Orchids Meet”, at the Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre from 13 to 20 November 2011 by issuing a series of specially-designed commemorative stamps. The 20WOC is co-organised by National Parks Board (NParks) and Orchid Society of South East Asia (OSSEA). Last held in Singapore 48 years ago, Singapore is the only Asian city with the rare privilege of hosting the iconic international event for a second time.

On Saturday, 12 November 2011, the First Day Cover of this stamp set will be featured at the Opening Ceremony of the 20WOC. In addition, a special Collector’s Sheet will be issued to make this event even more memorable for the visiting delegates.

The orchids illustrated in this stamp issue will also be on display at the World Orchid Show, which is a part of the 20WOC. The World Orchid Show will feature more than 75 stunning displays of orchid species and hybrids by exhibitors from 23 countries. These orchids can also be found in The Singapore Botanic Gardens and National Orchid Garden.

The Singapore Botanic Gardens and National Orchid Garden boast among the finest orchid collections in the world. At the National Orchid Garden, three hectares of carefully landscaped slopes provide a setting for over 1,000 species and 2,000 hybrids, with about 600 species and hybrids on display.

“It is an honour for Singapore to be able to host the prestigious 20th World Orchid Conference this year, and we are pleased to commemorate this event by working together with SingPost to produce a special series of stamps that showcase these unique orchids found in Singapore. Through these beautifully illustrated stamps, we hope that more people will come to better appreciate the intricate beauty of orchids, and its contributions to Singapore,” said Dr. Kiat W. Tan, Chairman of the 20WOC Organising Committee, and CEO of Gardens by the Bay.

This stamp issue will appeal to thematic stamp collectors and delegates alike. Apart from honouring the beauty that is in our midst, this set of stamps marks a significant event for Singapore and SingPost is happy to be part of this momentous occasion.”

Products on Sale

Featured in this stamp issue are five well-known orchids. Depicted on the 1st local stamp is Vanda Miss Joaquim, the national flower of Singapore, and on the 45-cents stamp, Renanthera 20th WOC Singapore, the official flower of the 20WOC. The 65-cents stamp portrayed Dendrobium World Peace, and on the 80-cents stamp is Cyrtocidium Goldiana which is popularly known as ‘Golden Shower’ in Singapore and ‘Dancing Ladies’. The S$2 stamp features Grammatophyllum speciosum, the largest orchid in the world and is also known as the Tiger Orchid.

Besides the complete set of five stamps (S$4.16), SingPost is also releasing the Presentation Pack (S$6.05), Pre-cancelled First Day Cover affixed with the complete set of stamps (S$5.05) and Collector’s Sheet (S$8.00).

All stamp products of this issue will be on sale from 12 November 2011 at the 20WOC shop at the World Orchid Show, all post offices and the Singapore Philatelic Museum. Orders can also be made at SingPost’s online shopping portal, vPOST, http://shop.vpost.com.sg.
